THE RADICAL OTHERNESS THAT HEALS YAGECERO NEOSHAMANINSM IN COLOMBIA
$60,000Healing Practices of Radical Otherness proposes an interesting theoretical advance by articulating various levels of local, regional, national, and transnational analysis. The book takes as a starting point a multi-situated ethnography and offers a rigorous sociological and political reading of the interactions between institutions and social and cultural representations of otherness. The original theoretical proposal is to analyze shamanisms´ reconfigurations from the perspective of ethnic and cultural heritage appropriation processes, and to accurately reconstruct, through the representation of otherness, national and ideological space and the most recent effects of multiculturalism. The concept of an ayahuascan field is pivotal to this innovative research that intertwines multi-situated ethnography with a biographical approach to the actors and a vast literature review on indigenous shamanisms, their networks, national policies, interethnic relations, and characterizations of otherness. Healing Practices of Radical Otherness allows the reader to come closer to neo-shamanic practices, by ´being there´, in order to perceive national and transnational influences that are an essential part of this ongoing dynamic phenomenon. The analysis of neo-shamanism and ayahuascan shamans in Colombia helps elaborate current discussions about contemporary shamanisms, as well as the wider subject of new religiosity, transformations in indigenous shamanisms, and the impact of non-indigenous shamanisms on indigenous groups and their identity policies. The value of this book lies in its contribution to the description of New Age spirituality, understanding it as a local practice. Furthermore, the book opens up a space for the comparison of different manifestations that occur in Colombia, mentioned above, with similar ones in other countries. Esther Jean Langdon -
